Wayne Brewer- TKI Chairperson

The Chair’s first report of 2025.
Kia ora,
Since the AGM, the CoM has been very busy with two CoM hui and other Management Project meetings plus the TPK Project to date.
Harvest.
The harvesting team has made great progress with several challenges overcome particularly in relation to Fire risk management. Ginger infestation is a major challenge. in the harvested area. Boundary realignment wok is also underway. Despite soft market conditions the Forestry Committee has recommended that the current harvest continues with in a 200-hectare block of mature trees to maximize returns. The next 200-hectare block will be harvested within the next five years if maturity and market conditions align.
Property investments.
Our newest CoM member Nicole Brewer has been appointed to the Property Management Committee. I am sure her experience in this field will be appreciated and she will add quality to the portfolio. Both buildings are on new long-term leases and either have or are undergoing major maintained and refurbishment to bring them up to date and as a result the returns have increased significantly.
TPK Project.
A short list of tourism projects has been approved for further assessment. Recommendations will be made to shareholders by mid-year, helping TKI maintain regular cash flow between harvests.
Health and Safety.
Kenneth has not only engaged H and S Professionals to evaluate and improve H and S but new signage has been installed throughout, and a master plan sign is about to be erected at the headquarters. Fires are strictly prohibited but Shareholders are welcome to access the Forestry but only after consulting and being briefed by Hano or Malcolm.
Boy Racers.
Continue to be a big problem and a real concern due to the fire risk and damage. If you witness unsociable or risky behavior anywhere within the forestry or on Ocean Beach Rd please report it immediately but do not approach the culprits. The Police, ODC and our own Management team are trained to handle such situations.
Cultural.
The cultural Committee of Stacey Whitiora and Dallas Seymore assist the CoM to formulate policy and advise on cultural issues.
Alternative Beach Access.
For the past four years the CoM has been lobbying and working with various authorities to create an alternative beach access at Tom French Grove. The situation has reached a crisis point this summer with record numbers od vehicles entering the beach by Maketu and travelling along the foreshore to the Ocean Beach and in the process destroying the ecology, the shellfish beds, the nesting birds and eroding the dunes. Not to mention the lost vehicles getting stuck in soft sand and incoming tides!
We have to stop this practice. TKI Maori title goes beyond low tide mark. Unfortunately, ODC has designated the beach a public highway. The Onepu Trust has started a petition to Council urging them to support us in creating a new vehicle access at Tom French Grove. Please support their petition.
Website.
Kenneth Riddell has done a great job getting this site up and running. We hope you enjoy it, Shareholders, please feel free to contribute.

Celebrating 50 Years of outstanding service.
On Friday 13th December 2024, I presented Forestry Manager Hano Ormsby with a pounamu taonga in recognition of his outstanding 50 years of service to the Tainui Kawhia Incorporation Forest from 1974 to 2024. In fact, Hano's association began prior to that when circa 1960 as a young local lad Hano hitched a ride on the Forest Service trailer delivering Pinus Radiata seedlings destined for an experimental planting on the TKI sand dunes.
Thank you Hano, Hinga and whanau Malcolm and Rick for the many years of dedicated service.

Wayne Brewer 15/12/2024.

The TKI logo, designed in 1998, prompts us to reflect on its relevance today. Does it still represent TKI's image in 2024? Should we update it to better reflect the current decade? Does it convey a corporate and professional image of who we are and what we do?
If you believe the logo needs updating, please provide your feedback to [tainui.kawhia.incorporation@gmail.com]. The CoM will consider all responses in due course.
